GeN AI to Agentic AI. Are we Actually Ready?
We were talking about AI automations at the start of 2020. Then comes GenAI in 2022. Now, we are entering the phase of AI Agents and Agentic AI just 3 years after. I’ve scouted many AI agent startups and the technology is very impressive, but are we really ready to move on to implementing this technology into businesses? My perspective - I don’t think so (yet).
I feel like technology startups try to prioritize their technology as a main selling point instead of focusing on how big the problem they are trying to solve. I also fell in this trap when I was building Tradies. I was banking on the virality and the ‘coolness’ of the feature instead of figuring out does it actually solve the problem… Going back to Agentic AI, I’m wondering if the use case is big enough for these corporate giants in order to adopt them. Yes, Agents think independently and needs little to no prompting but startups also charge a lot more for companies to adopt these agents. Reports have already shown that the majority of companies haven’t reached their expected ROI after adopting Gen AI tools, so I anticipate that the outcome will be similar when AI agents or Agentic AI starts to take off.
I feel like we are literally in a huge BUBBLE and no one is admitting it. Most startups try to use the most cutting edge technology to build products that add little to no value and companies are adopting them for PR play and act as if they are at the forefront of this technology revolution, but in reality no one is going anywhere. It’s like the IPhone nowadays where innovation means better battery and cameras (impressive but I don’t know if that is innovative), but people still buy them year after year and post it on Instagram just to prove that I’m following the trend and show that they’re super super cool. I miss the old days when I’m excited about the new features of the IPhone, and how I can use it improves my day to day life, but now it just plays safe by improving the bare minimum.
I honestly see this happening again in the next 3 years where some new technology comes out and everyone goes crazy for it and AI agents become the latter option (MARK MY WORDS). So to answer the question of this post, I don’t think we are ready, and we never will be ready for this technology change. The supply of technology is always higher than the demand to the point we have to actively ‘create demand,’ which could be good or it could be absolutely useless. E.g. your current solution can solve the problem in 5min, our solution can solve it in 4.99min, so you should definitely adopt our solution for $300k because we use the most cutting edge technology on the market. Enough rambling… I should go shower and sleep :(
